Bastille Day is a big celebration in France on 14 July each year. It's like Independence Day in the USA because it is a celebration of the beginning of a new kind of government and is also a national holiday.

The Bastille was a prison in Paris where the French royal family locked up anybody who disagreed with them. On 14 July 1789 a large number of French citizens attacked the Bastille. It was the beginning of the French revolution.

On the morning of 14 July, parades take place all over the country. The most important parade is on the Champs Elysees in the centre of Paris. Soldiers and police parade in their uniforms and the band plays music.

The President of the Republic of France watches the parade and then has a garden party at the Elysee Palace. At night thousands of
people watch a wonderful firework display under the Eiffel Tower.

Parties take place all over France on Bastille Day, but the best party in Paris is 'The Fireman's Ball'. Fire stations are party venues for the night. People go there to dance all night.
