In the early 19th century an Englishman called Charles Babbage wanted to find a way of making maths easier. In Babbage's time all numerical tables were calculated by people who were called 'computers'. Babbage noticed that these human computers made a lot of mistakes and he decided to build a mechanical machine to do the job: the difference engine. It had 25,000 parts and was the size of a small car. Babbage was helped by Ada Lovelace, who made special cards with holes in them. The cards were put in the machine to tell it what to do. They are considered to be the first ever computer programmes.
