Spiders are everywhere. They live in trees, in bushes, in buildings, underwater – even in the webs of other
spiders! They aren’t always popular with humans, but they help our planet. Here are some interesting facts
about them.
Different spiders make different webs. Some weave messy webs and wait in the centre for their prey. Others
weave sticky webs to catch their victims. Some weave webs like funnels and wait at the bottom for their
dinner. Other webs look like washing lines: The spiders hang their eggs on them! When engineers build
bridges, they often look to the complex designs of spiders’ webs for inspiration.
Spiders produce silk which they use to make their webs. It is one of the strongest natural fibres in the world.
Spiders are good for the environment because they help to keep down the numbers of insects. They are also
food for some other animals.
All spiders can bite but very few have a bite that is harmful to humans.
If a spider loses a leg, in some circumstances it can regrow.
Spiders can eat their own body weight in one meal!
Most spiders live for about a year but some can live for several years.
