Independence is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over the territory. Independence does not necessarily mean freedom. National Independence Day is an annual event which is celebrated to commemorate the independence of a nation become a sovereign state. Indonesia reached the independence on 17th of August. Soekarno and Hatta proclaimed it in Pegangsaan Timur Road No. 56, Central Jakarta. Therefore, every 17th of August, Indonesian people commemorate the independence day of Indonesia. For Indonesia, independence means free from colonialism, as written in the opening of UUD 1945 “That indeed independence is the right of all nations, and therefore then the colonization over the world must be abolished because it doesn’t appropriate with humanity and equity”.
There are many meanings of independence day for us, not only the day to commemorate the proclamation, but also to respect the heroes who sacrificed their life so Indonesia could reach the independence. We know that the independence is not easy to get. A lot of the Indonesian patriotic died on the battle field, fought against the colonizer. Soekarno once said, “A great nation is a nation that respects the struggle of their heroes.”. That means we have to respect all the struggle of the heroes, and we must continue their struggle. We must defend the independence which is not easy to get.
There are many ways to continue the struggle. Now, we are not facing the colonizer. So, of course our struggle will be different with the heroes in the past. Our struggle now is to study hard, to make Indonesia become a better country. With study hard, we can be an achiever who will make our nation proud. And by avoiding bad behavior, starts from ourselves, that’s mean we have already continue the struggle of the heroes.
So the conclusion, as a good student of Indonesia, we have to defend the independence of Indonesia. We have to study hard, to make our country better. With studying, we will be able to be an achiever and a great person in the future, who can make Indonesia better. Also we have to respect the merit of the heroes for all their struggle to reach the independence.
