The inspiration for the poem (come) to me as I (walk) down by the river. It (not/be) my first trip there, (walk) along the path there three times already that week without any ideas coming to me, but this time (be) different. It (not/come) to me immediately: I (already/walk) there for some time when I (see) a small black plastic bag down by the water, then another and another and another. Somebody – or perhaps many people – (throw) these bin bags down there, full of old clothes, bits of food, paper, tins, bottles and all sorts of unpleasant things. Looking at the bags, suddenly I (feel) inspired and (begin) to write. I (describe) the scene in detail, and hurried home to email my poem to a publisher as soon as I (can). When the reply (come) I (already/think) about how rich and famous I would be and I (read) the reply excitedly: 'Dear Mr Pinter, Let me be honest. Your poem is not only about rubbish, it is rubbish. Best Regards, Jonathan Cutter.'
