The Palace of Culture and Science (originally name is Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science) in Warsaw is the tallest build in Poland and the eighth tallest build in Europe. It is 231 metres tall which includes the height of the spire of 43 meters, but 188 m without the spire. Currently it is the 187th tallest building in the world. Construction started in 1952 and finished in 1955 and it was a gift from the Soviet Union to the people of Poland. The monumental walls are headed with pieces of masonry copied from renaissance houses and palaces from Cracow and Zamosc. The main architect was Lev Rudnev Soviet architect, and a leader practitioner of Stalinist architecture. He was the author of many large scale Soviet projects, for example: - the main building of Moscow State University - buildings of Latvian Academy of Sciences in Riga. Many Polish people initially hate the building because they considered it to be a symbol of Soviet domination. There are 3300 rooms on 42 floors, containing cinemas, theatres, museums, a large conference hall for 3000 peopleand an accredited university, Collegium Civitas.
