It took a long time to travel b y land. But journeys by sea were fast. Spain and Portugal paind men like Christopher Colubus, ferdinand magellan and Vasco Da Gama to look for new sea routes. Columbus and Magellan sailet west. Vasco de Gama sailed east. They all discovered places and people the Europeans did not know about. Columbus's first voyage was in 1492. He arrived on a Caribbean island, but he thought it was Asia. Ten years later, Amerigo Vespucci realised that Colombus's discovery was a different continent- America. It was a'new world'for Europe.
