Misalkan $y$ adalah sebuah variabel yang nilainya bergantung pada perubahan $x$ .

Maka, dengan membagi kedua ruas dengan $dx$ , kita memperoleh:

$\begin{aligned}\frac{dy}{dx}&=\frac{2x\,dx\:-\:3\,dx\:-\:2\sin x\,dx}{dx}\\\therefore\ \ \frac{dy}{dx}&=2x-3-2\sin x\\\end{aligned}$

dy/dx adalah notasi Leibniz untuk turunan pertama dari $y$ , yaitu $y'$ (notasi Lagrange untuk turunan pertama).

Oleh karena itu:

Karena y bergantung pada $x$ , maka $y = f(x)$ , sehingga $y' = f'(x)$ .
