"wish" , "if only" dan "woould rather" digunakan untuk menyatakan keinginan yang tidak mungkin terjadi atau penyesalan.

wish/if only + past simple → keinginan yang tidak mungkin terjadi sekarang. (unreal present)

contoh :

I wish I spoke Japanese. (fact : I don't speak Japanese)

wish/if only + past perfect → penyesalan tentang suatu kejadian di masa lalu. (unreal past)

Contoh : I wish I had arrived earlier this morning. (fact : I didn't arrive earlier this morning).

wish/if only + would/could → keinginan kemungkinan kecil akan terjadi di masa yang akan datang. (future immposible)

Contoh : I wish I could buy it. (Fact : It is unlikely that I can buy it.)
