Rock ma swoje korzenie już od 1940 roku a w 1950 roku związał się z rock and rollem, rytmem i bluesem, country , a także nawiązywał do muzyki folk, jazz i muzyki klasycznej. Dźwięk rock często związany jest z dźwiękiem gitary elektrycznej, basowej , perkusji i instrumentów klawiszowych, takich jak organy Hammonda, pianino lub od 1970 roku syntezatory.
