1) Leonardo da Vinci was born in the small town of Vinci in 1452. He was the son of a very rich man and a very poor woman. As a young man he got a very good education in Florence, the cultural and intellectual centre of Italy in those times. Later on he worked with the best painters until 1478 when he became a master.
2) In 1482 he wrote a letter to the Duke of Milan. In his letter he said that he was a good inventor and that he could build portable bridges and war machines. The Duke was so happy that he gave Leonardo work at his court. Later, Leonardo worked as an engineer and painter for the Duke of Romagna.
3) He was a very talented man and in his life he did many things at the same time. He designed and invented a lot of new objects and machines and he also painted. He left about 30 paintings, many of them were never finished. The most famous ones are The Last Supper and Mona Lisa (also known as La Gioconda). He was one of the first artists to use oil paints! He also left hundreds of drawings of his inventions and pages of notes about them.
4) There is another thing which is very unusual about Leonardo. He was a vegetarian for humanitarian reasons. He also seemed ecologically-friendly because he used every single piece of paper he had to the full. This is one reason why his notes are so messy!
5) Leonardo was a very careful observer. He was a revolutionary thinker and a great discoverer. He made discoveries in many different subjects for example in meteorology, geology and anatomy. He invented or designed even more. Some of his inventions are the parachute, the bicycle, the diving suit and the flying machine.
