Hans Christian Andersen urodził się 2 kwietnia 1805r. w Odense.Nazwisko Andersen jest w Danii tak bardzo popularne jek u nas Nowak lub Kowalski. Był synem szewca i praczki. Gdy miał 11 lat, zmarł mu ojciec. Otrzymał stypendium królewskie, które umożliwiło mu naukę w szkole, a później studia. Zwiedził wiele państw Europy. Pierwszą książką H.Ch.Andersena był zbiór utworów pt.”Młodzieńcze próby”. Wydał go w 1822r. pod pseudonimem Wiliam Christian Walter. Pisał wiersze, opowiadania, sztuki teatralne i baśnie. Te ostatnie przyniosły mu sławę na całym świecie. Zostały przełożone na ponad 80 różnych języków. Pierwsze wydanie baśni ukazało się w Danii w 1835r. Do najbardziej znanych należą: ”Dziewczynka z zapałkami”, „Calineczka”, „Królowa Śniegu”, „Świniopas”, „Brzydkie kaczątko”, „Słowik”. Był człowiekiem, o którym mówi się, że wyczarował dzieciom najpiękniejsze baśnie. Od 1956r. najwybitniejszym twórcom literatury, przeznaczonej dla dzieci, przyznaje się Medal im. H. Ch. Andersena. Jest to międzynarodowa nagroda przyznawana przez Światową Radę Książki dla Młodych. Zmarł w Kopenhadze 4 lipca 1875r.
