Hurricanes have names. Why is that?? There can be more than one hurricane at a time, so giving them names helps to monitor them.

An australian meteorologist began giving women's names to tropial storm before the end of the 19th century. In 1953 the U.S. National Weather Service began using female names for storms.

In 1979, they used both women's and man's names. They choose one name for each letter of the alphabet, expect for Q, U and Z. For Atlantic Ocean hurricanes, the languages people speak in the areas around the Atlantic.

Who decides what names are used each year? The World Meteorogical Organisation uses six lists in rotation. The same lists are reused every six years. The only time they add a new name to the list is if a hurricane is very big and does a lot of damage. Then they take the name off the list and choose new one!
