Teraz jest ona otwarta do ósmej wieczorem każdego dnia,
a w soboty do piątej po południu. Niestety, od 15 września
dzieci i młodzież nie będą mieć już możliwości korzystania
z biblioteki popołudniami.
Opinie nastolatków, z którymi rozmawialiśmy różnią się.
Niektórzy nie są zainteresowani tematem, ale większość
popiera naszą inicjatywę.
Patrzyłam na ankietę dotyczącą 4 ____________________
dzieci i młodzieży z Wielkiej Brytanii i około połowy z nich
lubi czytać, ale nie wszyscy czytają każdego dnia. Jestem
przekonana, że tak jak ja, wielu młodych ludzi chodzi do
biblioteki i wypożycza książki. Biblioteka jest też świetnym
miejscem, żeby usiąść i poczytać 5 ____________________
o polityce, sporcie, muzyce, czy modzie. Papierowe są o
wiele lepsze niż te w Internecie.
Życz nam powodzenia w naszej kampanii! I pozdrów ode
mnie wszystkich w szkole. Tęsknie za wami i za polskim
jedzeniem!

From Monday 15th September,
the public library in Clarence Road
will be changing its opening hours.
New times:
Mon-Fri: 9am – 4pm, Sat: 10am – 2pm, Sun closed
The main library in London Road will continue to stay
open until 8pm Monday to Saturday.
We apologise for any problems these changes may cause
but this is due to a decrease in the number of library users,
which makes it uneconomic to continue with the current
longer opening hours.

Have you seen the notice about the library in Clarence
Road? They’re cutting the opening hours and it will be
impossible for us to borrow books after school. They’re
still open on Saturdays but only for four hours. I use the
library a lot and so do a lot of other girls from my school,
not just to borrow bestsellers and other novels but also
because they have copies of newspapers and magazines.
From now on, I’ll have to go all the way to the London
Road library if I want to go after school but that’s
completely out of my way.
Do you think we should make a complaint or start a
campaign to keep it open?

How much do young British people enjoy reading?
Our survey of reading habits asks young people aged
11-18 about their reading habits. Our survey in 2021
showed that just over half of the young people we asked
claimed to enjoy reading, a slight drop from the year
before, although that was during the lockdown due to
the Covid pandemic. Before the pandemic, the
percentage of young people reading for fun had fallen
below 50% for the first time since our survey started in
1995. Now 65% of girls but only just over 40% of boys
say that they enjoy reading. Perhaps more worrying is
that only just over a third of all young people claim to
read books or other printed material daily.

Road library opening hours as they were.

Simon: There’s a big library in London Road. Why
does the town need two? Everything is on
the Internet these days.
Amelia: It’s a shame that they are reducing the hours
but Simon’s got a point. The council doesn’t
have much money and it’s better to spend it
on elderly people or helping the poor.
Natalia: I’d support your campaign. If the council
needs to save money, they could close the
museum. It’s terrible!
