The clinical trial developed in Spain called ÉPICOS (Clinical Trial for the Prevention of Coronavirus Infection in Healthcare), promoted by the Ministry of Health, has made the leap to Latin America. Countries such as Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay have joined the largest study of its kind in Europe and one of the largest in the world in which 4,000 professionals who are on the front lines of responding to the pandemic will participate.
To expand this representation of the professions that are acting against COVID-19 and due to the decrease in pressure at the hospital level, ÉPICOS will also have primary care personnel, mobile emergency / emergency services personnel, home care personnel and care centers for the elderly and / or with disabilities.
Currently, a total of 67 hospitals in 14 autonomous communities are part of this clinical trial coordinated by the National Plan on AIDS in Spain.
“If we demonstrate that any of the treatments being tested in EPICOS is effective, it would be logical to expand it to other professionals who are at risk, such as the State Security Forces and Corps or any other group that we consider to be highly vulnerable to the consequences. of COVID-19 ”, explains Julia del Amo, director of the National Plan on AIDS and principal investigator of ÉPICOS, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health of Spain.
Of the professionals currently participating in ÉPICOS, more than 40% are medical personnel, almost 30% are nurses, followed by other professionals such as nursing assistants, security guards, laboratory and radiology technicians, among others. Almost 65% of them are women and aged between 40 and 50 years.
