The united states is a very big country. It's over 4,500 kilometres from coast to coast. In the 19th century it took people a very long time to travel across the country. But how did they travel?

Wagon trains

When americans went west in the 19th century they usually travelled by wagon these wagons carried five or six people and all their clothes, food and furniture.

Oxen or mules pulled the wagons. The best wagons had big wheels so they could cross shallow rivers.

If the river was deep, the wagon became a kind of boat.Seven or eight wagons usually travelled together in a wagon train.

Pony Express

The pony express is famous but it only lasted for 19 months, between 1860 and 1861. Before the Pony Express, mail took 30 Days to travel by sea from NEW YORK to San francisko. By Pony Express, it took only two weeks. The Pony Express used 400 horses and 120 riders. The riders were usually very light (only 50 kilos) and quite young (the youngest was only eleven!). The horses only travelled for 15 kilometres, the riders for about 150 kilometers They travelled all night. In 1861 the railroad arrived and the Pony Express ended
