A different kind of football

A very strange game of football is played every year in Ashburn, in the North of England.

The game, which is over eight hundred years old, is called Shrovetide football. It last for two days and the pitch is the whole town plus the river and fields. There are hundreds of players in each team and there isn’t a referee. The goalposts are about five kilometers apart. Each one is under a bridge which goes over the river.

There are so many players in each team that some people stand on walls or climb trees. The ball is passed (usually by hand) between them. To score, a player has to stand in the river and hit the goalpost three times with the ball.

Player don’t have to wear special clothes, but most wear shinpads and some wear wetsuits. Evert year, some players have to go to hospital. Shopkeepers have to protect their shop windows and drivers have to park away from the town. These are the three main rules. (The third one isn’t necessary these days!)

Player must hit the goalpost three times to score a goal.

Player must stop playing by 10 p.m. each day.

Player mustn’t kill each other

For centuries, they didn’t have to change these rules. Then, about sixty years ago, a player was caught cheating. After that, they had to add a new rule to the list: players mustn’t transport the ball by car.
