Alegorią rozumu jest woźnica, który powozi rydwan ciągnięty przez dwa konie – czarnego i białego. Konie symbolizują siły odpowiednio: namiętności (czarny koń) i uczucia (biały koń). Woźnica to alegoria rozumu, który służy człowiekowi do tego, by realizować jedno i drugie na tyle, by rydwan jechał po drodze, a nie zbaczał na manowce. W takim wypadku ani siła uczyć, ani namiętności nie może być zbyt duża, ponieważ taki koń ciągnąłby wóz w swoją stronę. Dobry woźnica natomiast potrafi znaleźć złoty środek.
