The whole country was amazed by the performances of Diversity, a group male dancers, in the 2009 version of the TV show Britain's Got Talent, and it was no suprise when they won the competition. The kind of dancing they did was new to a lot of people, but it hard actually been popular for a while. It's called "street dancing", and in many ways it's more like a sport than a type of dance because of the energy the performers use.

Its popularity grew after the show, and kids wanted to try it themselves because it was great exercise and a great way to of keeping fit. But there was also a chance that steer dancing could serve a much more important purpose than that: it could help to fight knife crime, an increasing problem in the UK early years of the 21th century.

A survey in 2009 showed that just over a third of young people living in London believed that knife crime was a serious problem in their area. They were probably right to be worried, because one in four teenagers said they had carried a knife at some time in order to protect themselves, and 30 per cent thought it was OK to do that. More than 70 per cent expected crime levels to rise, not fall, and twothirds said that the police weren't doing enough about it.

The police and the government were finding it difficult to solve the problem, but teenagers themselves started to form organisations to fight knife crime. They held events at which young people could perform for other young people, ofte doing street dance. These organisations wanted to provide entertainment, but also to give out information about the dangers of carrying knives. Their message was that knives were not cool and people had to stop carrying them.

Other organisations, like Street Dance Productions, were fighting crime in a different way by sending dance teachers into schools. These of teachers found that boys who behaved badly many and missed school behaved well in their dance lessons and were really keen to do well. Dancing made them feel successful, perhaps for the first time in their lives, and it also used up their anger. This helped to make them feel calmer and, most importantly, it made them feel that they didn't want tojoin a gang and carry a knife.

More and more young people wanted to get involved in street dancing after Diversity's appearances on television It isn't often that people can say that a popular TV show has positive results but this was a very clear example.
