The Sabre-toothed cat, often incorrectly called the Sabre-toothed tiger, was commonly found in the grassy plains of North and South America. It became extinct about 10000 years ago as a result of the environmental changes after the last Ice Age. It shared many similarities with the modern-day lion. It was about the same size but it was more powerfully built. They were known as frightening predators due to their two enormous teeth which could grow up to 20 cm in length. With front legs powerful enough to enable them to spring up on prey, they had no difficulty finding food. However, the Sabre-toothed cat's bite was only one third of the strength of the lion. In addition, abre-toothed cats were social animals. They lived and hunted in groups unlikely other cats that are solitary hunters. But, their life was not always peaceful. They often fought over food or mates as lions do today.
