Był narodowości żydowskiej. Według Bibli żył 120 lat. Był bratem Aarona i Miriam Przed jego przyjściem na świat faraon Egiptu rozkazał mordowania nowo narodzonych chłopców żydowskich, aby zmniejszyć populację Izraelitów. Tymczasem matka Mojżesza włożywszy Go do małego koszyka puściła z nurtem rzeki [ Nilu ], raując tym samym jego życie. Po pewnym czasie został on wyciągnięty z rzeki przez córkę faraona. Poszedł, więc Mojżesz z bratem Aaronem do faraona, lecz ten odmówił zgody na wyjście ludu. Bóg wtedy za pośrednictwem Mojżesza zesłał na Egipcjan dziesięć plag, z których ostatnia była najbardziej dotkliwa i spowodowała śmierć wszystkich pierworodnych synów Egipcjan, także syna faraona. Dopiero wtedy faraon zezwolił na tymczasowe opuszczenie Egiptu przez Izraelitów jednak na wieść, że uciekają chciał ich dogonić i ponownie obrócić w niewolników. Bóg wtedy dokonał cudu: przed wędrującymi Izraelitami rozstąpiło się morze, a po ich przejściu zalało Egipcjan. Dalej Bóg prowadził Mojżesza i lud izraelski w kierunku góry Synaj gdzie Mojżesz zawarł przymierze z Jahwe, otrzymując od Niego kamienne tablice z dziesięcioma przykazaniami Bożymi. Jednak roztrzaskał je na wieść o tym, że Izraelici odlali sobie złotego cielca jako przedstawienie Boga. Po modlitwie za grzechy lud ponownie udał się na górę Synaj i otrzymał drugie tablice. Wtedy Bóg wyprowadził izraelitów na pustynie, którzy wędrowali po niej czterdzieści lat Do Ziemi Obiecanej weszli dopiero ich potomkowie, synowie i córki. Mojżesz ujrzał tylko Ziemię Kanaan. Pochowany został w nieznanym miejscu w krainie Moab.
