Mr. Drake could not bear hearing the dogs whining anymore. He picked up the telephone and dialled the police. "i live in a flat at no.61, Murray road", he told the police. "There seem to be a lot of dogs helplesy chained up in some flat above mine. I keep hearing them whine all day night". The police sent some men there immediately. When the police arrived at the flat, they too heard the low, whining sounds. Mr. Drake led the officers upstairs. The sound of the dogs grew louder as they went up. Soon they came to the rooftop of the building. To their horror, they found several cages with dogs and cats chained inside them. They were twenty-four dogs and eight cats altogether. The dogs appeared to be frightened of the men. Some of the dogs were so thin that they could not even stand up properly. The cats were crowded together in a cage and had not enought room to move about. "Look!" Exclaimed one of the officers. "Some of the dogs seem to be ill". The men looked around. They found a number of dog tags and two bowls of the dog food. "Why were these, dogs and cats chained up so cruelly?" Mr. Drake asked one of the officers. "These animals were probably going to be killed for meat," reflied the officer. "We have dealt with such cases before," he told Mr. Drake. "Luckily, you are reported the matter.
