Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy, and went to sea at the of 14. When his ship sank oft the coast of Portugal in 1470, he swam to shore and settled in that country. For the next five years Columbus made voyages to places as far away as Iceland and Guinea. In 1484 he presented his plan to sail to the Indies to King John of Portugal, but the king refused to help Shortly afterwards, Columbus moved to Spain, where King Ferdinand ang Quees Isabella became interested in his ideas. On August 2, 1492, Columbus set sail in search of the East Indies. The voyage was finaced by Ferdinand ans Isabella, but the crown had to put up very little money from the treasury. Instead they made the city of Palos pay back a debt to the crown by providing two of the ships. Columbus and his crew boarded the three ships that took more than two months to cross the sea. Like most educated individuals in the fiftenth century, Columbus knew that the earth was round. What he didn't realize was just how big a globe it was. Life at sea was not easy. Food was limited and consisted of cheese, honey, rice, garlic, beans, salted sardines, cod and pickled or salted beef and pork. Meat, usually poorly cooked with bones in it, was served in a large wooden bowl. The sailors had to pick at it with their fingers as they had no forks or spoons. Fish was eaten most often. On calm days, the crew could fish and cook their catch. Finally on October 12, 1492 Columbus first saw the islands of the New World. He landed in the Bahamas, thinking that he had reached the East Indies, the islands off Southeast Asia. Later he sailed to Cuba, and Hispaniola (now Haiti), where on Christams Das 1492, one of his ships sank. Columbus decided to go back to Spain, where he arrived on March 4. He made three additional voyages to the New World. During the second voyage with 17 ships he helped to colonize Hispaniola, and discovered the South American mainland. He did not, however, see mainland North America during any of his vowages. He returned to Spain for the last time on November 7, 1504 and died 2 years later at Valladolid, Spain at the age of 55.
