Choroba ojca sprawiała, że Elżbieta przejmowała coraz więcej jego obowiązków. W styczniu 1952 razem z mężem udała się w podróż po krajach Wspólnoty Narodów.Odwiedzila 15 krajow. Podczas pobytu w Kenii do Elżbiety przyszła wiadomość, że 6 lutego 1952 jej ojciec, król Jerzy VI, zmarł na raka gardła.
Elżbieta przebywała wówczas w hotelu Treetops w Thice. Była więc pierwszym od czasów Jerzego I brytyjskim monarchą, który w momencie wstąpienia na tron przebywał za granicą. Para królewska natychmiast wybrała się w podróż powrotną do Wielkiej Brytanii.
24 marca 1953 zmarła na raka gardła królowa-wdowa Maria Teck, jednak przed śmiercią wyraziła życzenie, aby z tego powodu nie przekładano koronacji. Odbyła się ona zgodnie z planem 2 czerwca 1953.
