People in Russia rode the first kind of roller coasters over five hundred years ago. In the beginning, they were just slides made of wood and covered with ice. People climbed a set of stairs and slid all the way down. It was a fast and enjoyable ride! The slides were very popular and soon warmer countries began to build them. By 1700, they built slides that didn't need ice, so rides become bigger and bigger. They were called Russian Mountains. At first, these rides were dangerous and there were a ot of accidents, so they weren't very popular. Later, in 1884 , an inventor called LaMarcus Adna Thompson built a safer roller coaster on Coney Island in New York. This roller coaster was very popular and more people began to ride on it. In the 1900s a man called John Miller designed better coasters that were bigger and faster. These days, roller coaster are the most popular attractions at any funfair or theme park, because people love rides that are fast and exciting!
