Persamaan kesetimbangan hidrolisisnya:

karena setiap 1 mol air terhidrolisis membentuk 1 mol H⁺ dan 1 mol [OH⁻], maka dapat kita asumsikan:
[H⁺] = [OH⁻]
∴ Kw = [H⁺][OH⁻]

dari sini kita sudah bisa menghitung [H⁺] dan pH larutan tersebut:
[H⁺] = √Kw
