a) Yes, they are. Everybody is listening to the teacher (or coach), because they're looking at him. I think they admire him, perhaps he is a professional swimmer. Maybe he is explaining something. No child is looking the other way. It's possible they haven't been able to swim and this is the first time.
b) In my opinion, boys and girls shouldn't do sports together at school, because boys are much stronger and do a lot of things faster than girls. For example if they play football together and a boy hits a girl, she'll feel more pain that if another girl hits her. Sometimes boys can do something bad, because they want to feel better. Finally, it can end bad.
