Sin embargo, la Historia del Baloncesto tal y como lo conocemos hoy es relativamente moderna y se remonta a 1891, fecha en la cual por encargo el profesor canadiense de la International YMCA Training School de Springfield (Massachusetts), James Naismith, ideó un deporte que se pudiese jugar en pista cerrada, para ser practicado en épocas de invierno.
Para idear el baloncesto Naismith se enfocó en el dominio de la destreza sobre la fuerza y el contacto, y se inspiró en un juego de su infancia denominado “duck on a rock” (El pato sobre una roca), que consistía en intentar alcanzar un objeto colocado sobre una roca lanzándole una piedra. Naismith pidió al encargado del colegio unas cajas de 50 cm de diámetro pero este tan solo pudo conseguir unas canastas de melocotones, que mandó a colgar en las barandillas de la galería superior que rodeaba el gimnasio.
Fue de esta manera como James Naismith creó el deporte conocido como Baloncesto o Basketball, la esencia del juego, simple, este se jugaría solo con las manos y tendría como objetivo meter el balón en una cesta, de donde proviene su nombre, y los requisitos de este nuevo deporte fueron expresos desde su origen:
