The first charity supergroup

In 1984, the Irish rock singer Bob Geldof saw a TV programme about famine in Africa. He asked his musician friends to record a song for charity. Some of the most famous stars in the world formed a 'supergroup' calleg Band Aid. Their song raised eight million US dollars in the first month. Then Geldof started planning something much bigger- Live Aid.

The first international rock concert

Live Aid was called 'the biggest rock concert in the world' . On 13th July 1985, more than one hundred and fifty thousand people attended concerts in Britain, the USA, Australia and Russia. One and a half billion people watched it on television and Live Aid raised about eighty million dollars for charity

Stop world poverty

Twenty years later, Bob Geldof and Bono helped to organise Live 8. They wanted politicians from eight of the world's richest countries to listen to their message Make poverty history. There were concerts in ten countries.

Protect the environment

Live Aid and Live 8 weren't as big as Live Earth. In 2007, there were ten huge concerts on six continents. The organisers wanted to teach the world about global warming. 'Nothing on Earth is as important as this', they said. Celebrities and their fans promised to change their lifestyles and 'go green'.
