If there are witnesses or clear evidence, it is easy to decide if someone is innocent or guilty of a crime. But what do you do when in is the word of one person against annother, or there isn't enough proof? In the Middle Ages they used different methods. One way was trial by fire. The suspect had a pick up a red-hot piece of metal, or walk over coals. If not, they were guilty! Another way was trial by combat,where theaccused fought against the person who had accused him. The winner was assumed to be right. In the Middle Ages people used to beileve there were witches. Villagers threw the 'witch' into the water- if she floated it showed she was a witch and could be punished, but if she sank she was innocent. The only  way out was to almost drown before being rescued.
