Na podstawie tekstu wykonaj Task 1.
All communication systems have a few
similar characteristics. For instance, all signals in any communication system
have their own meaning and they are sent on purpose. However, one
characteristic which is the same for all of them is that they can only express
what is going on now and their signals can never refer to the past or
future.

People communicate in many
non-verbal ways. The look and smell of a
person can tell a lot even if we don`t know somebody personally. What`s more, if we try to talk without making
faces or using our hands, soon we will find communication very difficult. This is what kinesics is about- the
way we use our body to produce a message, sometimes quite different from what
words are actually saying.

Have you ever fought with your
brother or sister for more place in your common room? What you fought for was
space. We all live in space. Space is what is around us, what we need to live,
what many people fight for. The distance between two people talking tells a lot
about how close they are. Parents hug
their children, but teachers don`t hug their students. You stand closer to your friend when you talk
then to your elderly neighbor. Italians stand very near and Swedes quite far
when they talk- this social distance is connected with their culture. Proxemics describes how people use
space to show how close their relationship is.
And when you are a trade representative, you`d better sit next to your
customer. When you sit across the table,
for example, your customer may think you are testing him and nobody likes being
tested!

Haptics, on the other hand, is the science
of touching. Some psychologists have
studied the effects of touching during conversations. Their discoveries were
very interesting. In one case, the speaker
simply told the listeners a story. With
the next group of listeners, the speaker from time to time touched the
listeners on their arms or heads especially when he was saying something
important. Guess what? The listeners
from the second group remembered the story better and thought the speaker was
more believable than the listeners from the first group. The second group felt a “connection” with the
speaker.

Last but not least, there are
certain little elements that we add to our spoken language to draw attention to
what we are saying. All this pauses we
make, little cries or interjections slightly modify or make the meaning
stronger. This is called paralanguage, another non- verbal
communication system.

Task 1. Which non-verbal communication system……

……………………….uses
hands to make people remember the message better?
…………………….....deals
with distance among people talking?
……………………….studies
body language?
……………………….suggests
that when you are silent you can also produce a message?
……………………….says
that instead of speaking you can make a face?
……………………….makes
the speaker more convincing?
……………………….mentions
cultural differences?
……………………….would
consider a yawn to be a communicative signal?
