Betty Owens is a rich woman . Last saturday , someone stole her jewels . She put them on a table in the living room , then she left the room to answer the phone . When she came back ten minutes later the jewels weren`t there . There were four other people in the house when the jewels disappeared : he younger sister , Cindy , her older brother , Marcel , her husband Antonio , her secretary , Louise .

Her younger sister, Cindy, was reading in the living room. She was reading a very exciting murder mystery. She was reading the last 10 pages and she didn’t see anything. Her older brother, Marcel, was in the garage repairing his sports car. The engine was turned on and he didn’t hear anything. Her husband, Antonio, was on the telephone talking to the doctor. Her secretary, Louise, was in the office. She was typing a letter and she didn’t hear anything.

When the police arrived, they asked everyone if they saw or heard anything. They said, “No.” Then the police checked everyone’s alibi and they arrested Antonio Owens. The police found out that the house telephone was out of order that day and that Mr. Owens never spoke to the doctor. The police also found out that Mr. Owens needed money for gambling and that was why he stole his wife’s jewels.
