October 2018 2 19 Report

Last winter some friends and I went walking in
some mountains, and it was a walk I will never forget.
We are all experienced walkers: we are all able read a
map and use a compass, but we found ourselves in
trouble.

It was a beautiful day and as we walked we can see
all the other mountains around us very clearly. It was
very still and silent: the only sounds we could hear
were our boots in the snow.

The weather forecast was good, but weather forecasts could be wrong,
so we had brought warm clothes and our mobile phones, in case of an
emergency.

We had reached the top of the mountain and were coming down when
we noticed some clouds coming towards us very fast. This meant that a
storm was on its way so we began to hurry. About ten minutes later
Nigel suddenly fell over and shouted out to us. He'd hurt his ankle badly
and he couldn't puts any weight on it. He couldn't walk at all. Paul said,
'We couldn't stay here. The storm will be here soon'. So Nigel put his
arms on Paul and Mark's shoulders and they helped him down.

We could continue like this for about half an hour but then the storm hit
us. We didn't see anything because the snow was so thick. We decided
to stay where we were. We could find a sheltered place to wait and we
phoned for help. We were able to tell the mountain rescue team where
we were and that Nigel was injured. Nigel was very cold and tired and he
didn't able to speak much but we could keep him awake. We gave him
some more clothes and managed keep him quite warm.

The rescue team came an hour later. They could carry Nigel off the
mountain on a stretcher and take him to hospital. It was a great relief to
see him later sitting up in bed smiling!
