Człowiek pierwotny był moralny – niemoralność Rousseau postrzegał jako wymysł rozumu. Dziki nie znał występku, egoizmu, kierował się miłością do świata; nie znał nawet miłości, w której Rousseau także dostrzegał racjonalizację instynktu w postaci chęci podporządkowania sobie drugiej osoby.
