Un alga (Algae L. 1751) es un organismo con capacidad de realizar la fotosíntesis y obtener el carbono orgánico con la energía de la luz del Sol, diferente de una embriofita o planta terrestre. Casi siempre viven en un medio acuático y pueden ser unicelulares o pluricelulares. En la definición moderna del término se consideran solo organismos eucariotas. Esto incluye a las algas verdes (que se suelen clasificar entre las plantas), las algas pardas(que son protistas), las algas rojas (que se pueden clasificar entre las plantas o entre los protistas según el criterio que se tome) y varios grupos de protistas unicelulares o coloniales que forman parte del fitoplanctonLas cianobacterias son fotótrofas pero son procariotas(bacterias), aunque algunos autores las incluyen en el término.1 2
