A. FOCUS ON OTHERS B. DON’T BE TOO DOMINANT OVER OTHERS C. LISTEN TO OTHERS, THEY MAY BE RIGHT D. MAKE OTHERS LISTEN TO YOU HOW TO IMPROVE INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Good interpersonal relations are essential. Humans are social beings and throughout their lives they interact socially with one another. It is therefore important to develop good relations with others – our family members, acquaintances, colleagues, etc. We recommend Dale Carnegie’s classic book How to Win Friends and Influence People first published in 1936. Below just a few tips from the famous book. 1.
You can’t just force your way of thinking on others. They have every right to think, come up with ideas or solutions, just like you. Understand that people’s opinions may be different from yours. Don’t act bossy or authoritarian. Instead, if you feel they are wrong, try offering suggestions. Suggestions make people more open to considering your idea rather than stubbornly defending theirs. Needless to say, it leads to mutual understanding and improves interpersonal relations. 2.
When two people argue, neither one is really listening to the other. You’ll be better off if you remain calm and listen to the other person’s thoughts. Then take some time to consider them. Maybe you’re wrong! And if you are right, telling someone else that they are wrong will only make them even angrier. Be tactful in your approach and consider the other person’s feelings. Try asking yourself how you would feel in their situation. 3.
This goes back to the principle of paying attention to other people. Listen more than you speak and encourage others to talk about themselves. Most people’s favourite subject is themselves. Show interest in what they say, ask questions about what they do, how they feel, what they plan, etc. Try to show that they are important to you and what they do and say matters to you. It will help you develop good relations with them. Adapted from: www.positive-attitude-tips.com/interpersonal-relations.html II. Wpisz właściwy wyraz. (4 pkt)
