Hundred of years ago in a small italian town a merchant had a misfortune of owning a large sum of money to a moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter, so he proposed a bargain. Both the merchant and his daugther were horrified by the proposal.
The moneylender told the, that he would put a black pebble and a white one into an empty bag. The girl would have to pick one of them. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender's wife ad her father's debt would be cancelled, If she picked the white one, she would be free and so would her father.
The next day, the three of them were standing on a pebble strewn path in the merchant's garden. As the talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up the pebbles. With her sharp eyes, the girl noticed that the moneylender picked two black pebbles
When she picked one of the pebbles from the bag, she intentionally fumbled and let the pebble she took fall onto the pebble-strewn path. It mixed with all other pebbles. ' oh, how clumsy I am,", she said. 'But dont worry, you will know which pebble I took by looking into bag to see the remaining pebble," she continued confidently.
Since the raimaninhg pebble was black, so the smart girl and the merchant were free from the debt and the promise of martying the moneylender.
