How does friction affect the work of a machine?

Friction is like an obstacle, so when theres friction the machine has to pass the obstacle and for that to be accomplished the machine wastes energy because of friction, therefore the efficienty Is lower (because the energy it needs to work isnt completely used for the machines purpose... a part has to be used to 'defeat' friction)
