The navigator Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. Son of a humble weavers, had clear very young I wanted to be a sailor, but had another great hobby, which were geography and maps. His studies and knowledge on the subject led him to conceive a great idea: make a trip to the Far East but not for the Mediterranean, but sailing in the opposite direction, ie westward. Columbus believed that the earth was round, and therefore, going by the Atlantic Ocean, eventually also reaching China and Japan. Columbus called for economic aid to the king of Portugal but as ignored him, turned to the Catholic Monarchs and reached an agreement with them which, among other things, was granted in advance the titles of Admiral of the Ocean Sea, and viceroy and Governor of the lands they might discover during the trip. Columbus had three ships: the Santa Maria, aboard which he would, the Pinta and the Niña. The ships sailed on August 3, 1492 from the port of Palos (Huelva), bound for the Canary Islands, where they made a stopover before continuing their viaje.Tras many days sailing sailors began to despair because they saw nothing but water and there was even a mutiny aboard: the crew threatened that if in three days did not reach their destination, would compel him to return. Luckily, on October 11 they began to appear in the pieces sea of grass and woods indicating that the land had to be close. At dawn on October 12, the sailor Rodrigo de Triana, aboard the Pinta, shouted "Land!". They had reached the island of Guanahani, which Columbus named it San Salvador, and was inhabited by indigenous peaceful. Two days later they continued exploring the area and discovered the islands of Cuba and the Spanish (Santo Domingo) .After his return to Spain months later, Columbus organized three more voyages to America and in each explored other places hitherto unknown as Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the coast of Venezuela, Honduras, Panama ... Columbus died in Valladolid in 1506 convinced that he had found a new route to Asia and that there had arrived, but he never knew he had actually discovered a new continent. I bet you're wondering where the name of America ... Now this name was put to the continent in 1507, in honor of Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian navigator who was the first to realize that the lands discovered belonged to a new world . Instead Colombia, a country in South America, is named in honor of the discoverer. ESPERO TE SIRVA
