The Coast Guard ship , the Tamaroa , was called to another rescue that night. A helicopter had crashed into the ocean and sunk immediately . Four of the five men on board were still alive in the water. The men from the helicopter saw the lights of the Tamaroa , moving slowly thought the huge waves towards them. The waves were so violent that the four men in the water were getting lifted high into the air. Sometimes a man was taken right to the top of the wave, 10 metres higher than the deck of the Tamaroa. At any moment the men might crash against the side of the ship and be killed. ‘It’s impossible to throw them a rope in these terrible waves,’ thought the ship’s captain. ‘The wind will blow the rope away from them. There’s only one possible way to save these men. They will have to swim to us.

Fale były tak gwałtowne, że czterej mężczyźni w wodzie dostawali się podnoszony wysoki do powietrza. Czasami mężczyzna został wzięty dobrze do szczytu fali, 10 metrów wyższych niż pokładem Tamaroa.
