its true name is Anfiteatro Flavio, everybody knows it by the name of Coliseum and it is the symbol itself of the city of Rome in the world.
It was built in 72 A. D. by Vespasian and finished eight years after by his son Titus.
The Coliseum was comparable, for its time, to our stadiums, even if the performances were very different from those of nowadays.
The Roman people gathered in mass to attend the Circus games (ludi cistercenses), where the gladiators fought among themselves. In the Coliseum performances were organized, often bloody, in which gladiators, wild beasts and prisoners (often Christians) fought for their lives. Often it was flooded to simulate sea battles. All this ended when in the V century, a man named Telemachus entered the arena and tried to make gladiators stop fighting; he was killed, but since that day, in Rome, games took place no more.
The elliptic ring of Coliseum has the longest axis measuring 187 mt., the shorter 155 mt., the height of the highest ring is over 50 mt., the spectators could reach the number of 80.000.
Centuries passing by left very little of the ancient pomp, in fact the great amphitheatre was very rich of marbles an decorations, gone lost most of all during the Renaissance, when the need for marble was exceptional and the marble of the Coliseum was removed and used elsewhere.
The little square is probably the place most crowded of visitors you can see in Rome, tens of thousands of visitors that every day visit the work to throw into the basin a coin, that, as the legend tells, guarantees the tourist to come back to Rome in his lifetime.
The world-wide fame of this fountain was given also by the scenes of the famous movie "La dolce vita" by Federico Fellini.San Peter's Basilica is situated in Città del Vaticano, the residence of Popes since 1377.
The present church stands on the ruins of the ancient early Christian church dedicated to Peter, where the grave of the apostle is placed.
The building of the new Basilica was decided by Niccolò V, but it was carried out by his successor Giulio II; during the 176 years in which the factory of San Pietro was working, the most important architects and artists of the time worked there: Bramante, Rossellino, Antonio da Sangallo the younger, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini, Borromini, Maderno, Giacomo della Porta, Domenico Fontana, are only few of the great names that left their signs in the design of the Basilica, inside and outside.
The dome, clearly visible from many areas of the city, dominates the view of Rome; it was designed by Michelangelo and carried out by Fontana and Della Porta, and is one of the most famous buildings in the world.
Arriving in San Pietro from Via della Conciliazione you come to the square designed by Bernini, an endless set of marvelous columns to which two fountains (one by Maderno and one by Domenico Fontana) join, and the central obelisk too. On the background you can see the façade of the Basilica, designed by Maderno and finished in 1614.
Within the portico, on the façade, 5 doors open; the one that stands on the right side is the Holy Door. This door is officially opened by the Pope according to a special rite, exactly on Chritmas Day.
Once you cross the door, you're struck by the grandiosity that characterizes the Basilica; going on you find the several treasures left by the great architects who worked there, till you come to the area corresponding to the dome.
The space under the dome is partially occupied by the beautiful Baldachin made by Bernini; the sensation felt by the people who stand in this point of the Basilica is probably indescribable, one of those memories the visitor will certainly bring with him going back home.
