Exchange Trips
In the 1990s, foreign exchange trips were very popular amongst teens in Britain. Almost every student 1)............ the opportunity by their school to travel abroad and stay for a short period of time with a host family. Usually, this host family would include a student that would in turn spend time with a host family in Britain. In the months running up to these trips, students would write to their foreign pen-pals, getting to know them before they met 2).......... person. Not only was it a fantastic cultural experience for teens, but it was also often a unique opportunity for them to use a language they were learning at school with 3).......... speakers. These days, however, it appears that foreign trips are becoming a thing of the past. Now, only around 30% of schools in Britain offer such trips, with figures showing that private schools are twice as 4)........... to offer exchange trips than state schools. This has probably been caused by budget cuts to state education and perhaps a greater unwillingness to let teens 5)....... time in unknown environments. Nevertheless, it is a pity that this tradition is dying out, particularly at a time when understanding other cultures is more important than ever.
