El sonido no es más que una agitación de un medio fluido que puede ser gaseoso, líquido, o solido. Son ondas de choque que se propagan por el medio en cuestión y que son percibidas por nuestros oidos, los cuales no son sino una serie de huesos y membranas diseñados para resonar en la frecuencia de esta onda de choque externa y transmitir esta información al cerebro que lo interpreta como un sonido en partícular.

Entonces, para que exista sonido tiene que haber un medio en el cual estas ondas de choque puedan propagarse, y el vacío es precisamente eso, vacío, por lo tanto no hay ningún medio (ni gaseoso, ni líquido ni mucho menos sólido) en el cual el sonido pueda ser transmitido.
