I disagree, because for most people having different backgrounds people as your friends might create obstacles in making close friends. Because, they might also have completely different interests and cultures which could be quite shocking if you weren't used to socialize well with people. While having someone who is similar to you, might make it easier for you to befriend with him/her.  Because you could relate to what his/her interests are, and might make it useful for your friendship with him/her.
