James Watt was a famous Scottish engineer. He was born in Greenock, Scotland in 1736 and died in Handsworth in 1819. He was the inventor of the steam engine which revolutionised the industry, though his invention couldn't have been possible without examining the Newcomen steam engine invented previously by Thomas Newcomen. That was the actual thing Watt was basing on. James Watt, before starting his work with engines worked on maintaining scientific instruments. That's how he found out about the Newcomen steam engine - one university gave it to him so that he could repair it.
