Energią potencjalną (Ep) nazywamy energię ciała pozostającego w spoczynku. Wyróżniamy dwa rodzaje energii potencjalnej: energię potencjalną grawitacji (ciężkości) - np. ciało podniesione na jakąś wysokość i energię potencjalną sprężystości, np. nakręcony zegarek.
Energią kinetyczną nazywamy energię, jaką posiada ciało będące w ruchu. Energię kinetyczną oznaczamy symbolem Ek. Dzięki energii kinetycznej ciało może wykonać perwną pracę równą tej energii, np. wprawić w ruch inne ciało, czy zużyć ją na pokonanie sił tarcia.
