I thought it was good to have a big car. It meant you always had space for lots of passengers and luggage, if you went on holiday you could sleep in the car if necessary, and it was so good to have all the comforts that often go with a big car. And, of course, I have to admit that it was quite nice to see the looks of admiration on the faces of your friends and family when you turned up in your latest gi-normous vehicle.Nowadays though people don’t buy big cars quite so easily. In fact, in some places people look at you really angrily if your car is bigger than a toy box. The ‘ecogang’ have arrived, you see, and they make you feel really bad about buying big. How dare you use up all that petrol? How dare you create all that pollution? How dare you take up all that space on the road? How dare you occupy the parking space of two normal cars? You need a really thick skin (and a big wallet) if you insist on going down the big car route.However, there is some sense in these arguments. Whereas a few years ago you might not even have thought about the cost of petrol, nowadays you have no choice. And ten years ago I don’t know if I’d ever even heard the word ‘pollution’. Wow, has that changed! With so many cars on the road and the constant traffic jams, small cars have a lot of advantages – you can squeeze between huge lorries, nip down tiny side roads, and of course, park in the tiniest spaces. OK, in fact, these days I agree that big cars should be a thing of the past. Really, I know you’re right … but some of my big creatures really were quite beautiful.
