Najpopularniejszą była jednk wersja o ulepieniu człowieka z gliny i łez Prometeusza. Twórca człowieka, tytan, ciału powstałemu z ziemi podarować miał duszę, stworzoną z niebieskiego ognia. Twór Prometeusza, ze względu na materiał, z którego powstał, posiadał w sobie zarówno pierwiastki ziemskie jak i boskie. Mitologiczny człowiek nie pochodził jednak bezpośrednio od bogów. Był słaby i nagi, nie rozumiał świata, który go otaczał. Dopiero Prometeusz, który dał człowiekowi ogień i światło, nauczył go życia. Człowiek, według mitologii, nie był więc z założenia istotą wyższą nad otaczającą go ziemię. Formował się powoli pod przewodnictwem swojego mistrza - Prometeusza.
Z teorią powstania człowieka związany jest luźno mit o czterech okresach ludzkości. Na początku panował wiek złoty, będący odpowiednikiem raju. Człowiek żył bez trosk, nie znał starości, a jego życie było wieczną zabawą. Potem nastał wiek srebrny, w którym ludzi bardzo powoli osiągali dojrzałość, ich starość była przykra. Powoli odwracali się od bogów, ich serca ogarniała pycha i złość. Aby ukarać zbrodnie i upadek obyczajów Zeus zesłał na Ziemię potop. Odrodzona na nowo ludzkość weszła w wiek brązowy, pełen wojen, podłości i niesprawiedliwości. Według niektórych wersji to w tej epoce Zeus ukarał ludzi potopem. Wiek brązowy był wiekiem herosów i ich wielkich czynów. Ostatnia epoka to czasy historyczne, nazwane wiekiem żelaza, charakteryzujące się postępującym wciąż upadkiem moralnym i społecznym.
