Joya de ceren is the best preserved domestic archeological site in the Americas. The ruins, near San Juan Opico, are spread over a small area, but the site and the museum next door are both good places to learn what everyday life in El Salvador was like 1500 years ago.

Archeological evidence indicates that Joya de ceren´s inhabitants ate deer and dog meat, corn, beans, squash, chili peppers, cacao, avocados, and nuts. The ruins were discovered in 1996 when a bulldozer clearing land for grain silos overturned part of an ancient wall. The discovery was initially ignored, but later on, archeologists realized that something important was beneath the surface, and ground radar was used to locate other buildings deep beneath the clay and ash.

By bus, you might be able to visit joya de ceren and san Andres ruins in a single afternoon. The area is often packed with schoolchildren on field trips for the day. Take bus 108 from San Salvador to San Juan Opico, get off at “ruinas” stop. Then walk down the road to the ruins.
