Most people would want to avoid a natural
disaster in real life but, strangely enough, a lot
of them love watching fictional representations
of such events. Film studios (1) spend / rely on
such blockbusters to attract large audiences
to the cinemas. These films usually have fairly
predictable plots – like a devastating
(2) forest fire / earthquake started by a gang of
narrow-minded tourists which, in addition,
is threatening a convoy of medical supplies.
Or (3) a tremor / an avalanche making it almost
impossible to (4) sweep / evacuate victims from
hospitals cut off by snow. However, viewers like
to watch terrifying events and scenes of mass
panic, as long as the right people save the day
in the end! Some experts think that these films
provide a psychological relief, especially at times
when we feel insecure about life. For example,
when we watch people running to escape a wall
of water as a(n) (5) tsunami / avalanche
approaches, we realise that we are actually safe.
